Helen Stokes is a leading
exponent of cast glass. Her work is remarkable for its
finely worked detail and exquisite texture, yet the sculptural
forms are strong and dynamic.
It is not surprising that much of
Stokes' work is inspired by what she finds on the beach.
That boundary between the visible, conscious land and
the unconscious, deep and mysterious sea, for her work
explores the boundaries found between inner feeling and
outer form. Fissures, holes and crevices that emulate
the corrosive action of the sea on rocks and shells provide
in Stokes work the insightful connections between inner
and outer being. Hers is a spiritual journey of self-discovery
and the beauty of her work invites us to join in. |
